VETERANS IN POLITICS INTERNATIONAL COMMENDS CLARK COUNTY

DISTRICT ATTORNEY STEVE WOLFSON FOR TAKING A COURAGOUS POSITION

Veterans In Politics International (VIPI) commends Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson for his decision to seek an indictment against Las Vegas police officer Jesus Arevalo in the fatal shooting of Stanley Gibson on December 12, 2011.

For almost ten (10) months, Veterans In Politics have called for an investigation in the shooting death of Mr. Gibson by Metro police officer Jesus Arevalo in what has been previously described as a “failure in communication” of various officers on the scene.  The Review Journal originally reported the shooting as follows:

Stanley Gibson, a 43-year-old disabled Gulf war veteran was off his anti-anxiety medication and stricken with paranoia as he headed back to the apartment . . .  In his confusion, Gibson ended up at an apartment complex a few blocks away, prompting suspicious residents to call police.  Officers confronted Gibson in his car, which was pinned between two patrol cars, ultimately firing a fatal shot. He was unarmed.

Further, a witness videotaped Mr. Gibson’s vehicle surrounded by Metro, when shots were fired.  http://www.lvrj.com/multimedia/Eye-witness-video-of-the-police-shooting-Stanley-Gibson-135531133.html

The police had fully blocked Mr. Gibson’s car in for more than a half an hour when Officer Jesus Arevalo failed to follow legal orders and shot Gibson in the back of the head with an AR-15 rifle.  Mr. Gibson was unarmed at the time of his death.

Although nothing can bring Gibson back, Veterans In Politics has advocated for justice for Mr. Gibson’s senseless killing.   The recently appointed District Attorney Wolfson listened to our concerns and we are grateful for his prudence in this highly controversial case. Veterans In Politics will continue to monitor the progress of this case and look forward to seeing District Attorney Wolfson continuing to do the right thing.

We thank District Attorney Steve Wolfson for choosing to allow the Grand Jury to hear the evidence and we hope Mr. Gibson’s family will finally get justice for his death.
